Whale of a Tale
We went out on a double hulled catamaran to do a bit of whale watching today. Humpback whales come to Hawai'i in droves to mate and give birth during the winter months. We're lucky enough to be here at the tail end of the season, just in time to catch them before they head back to Alaska in April.
We were rewarded with a fabulous sail, stunning views of Diamond Head, and 5 whale sightings, including 2 baby whales, several tail flips, a few spyhops and a full breach from a calf.
All that sea-going made us hungry so we dashed off to a kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt sushi) restaurant along Waikiki Beach for dinner. What fantastic sushi! We ate our fill of toro, eel & avocado rolls, yellowtail, edamame and tamango. I just love these places - the fancy plates, the rotating sushi, and 50's diner like atmosphere seem to make the sushi taste even better.
In the morning we're off to the Big Island to visit Kona and then Volcano Village. I'm crazy excited about our visit to Volcano - Kilauea is more active now than any time since 1924! Though some portions of Volcano National Park are closed due to the active conditions, many areas are open and I have plans to hike in to some of the over land flows and to drive out to the areas where lava is actively flowing into the sea. Current Kilauea eruption information available here.

50s style diner sushi... seems very eclectic.
